The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

Corçà is a village in Baix Empordà, in the province of Girona. Its flag is yellow, with a large red heart and, at the end, a red cross and four red bars. It is a very recent flag: it is under twenty years old.

How it came about

The city council proposed it on 28 November 2013 and the plenary approved it on 29 January 2015. The Institut d’Estudis Catalans gave it the all-clear because it was a simple copy of the coat of arms put onto cloth. The Generalitat registered it in May 2015.

How it has changed

It is the first official flag of Corçà and has not changed since 2015.

What it means

  • Heart

it plays with the name of the village, which sounds like ‘cor sa’, ‘healthy heart’ in Catalan.

  • Red cross and four bars

the emblem of the city of Barcelona.

Fun facts

  1. A village that was a street of Barcelona

In 1442 Corçà received the privilege of ‘carrer de Barcelona’: its inhabitants had the same rights as those of the capital. That is why it carries the cross and bars of the flag of Barcelona.

  2. A coat of arms that speaks

The heart is what heraldry calls a canting coat of arms: a drawing that sounds like the name of the place.

  3. The coat of arms changed first

The coat of arms of 2000 had only the heart. In 2014 the emblem of Barcelona was added to it and, a year later, that new coat of arms became the flag.
