The full story
How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.
The flag of Espadella does the simplest possible thing with its name: it puts three swords on a red ground. The place name means exactly that, and the flag says so with nothing else, as almost the rest of the País Valencià does.
How it came about
The arms were approved by Resolution of 19 December 2001, of the conseller de Justícia i Administracions Públiques, published in DOGV number 4,182. The flag came three and a half years later: the Resolution of 22 April 2005, published in DOGV number 5,007.
The arms have a red field with a silver sword. The flag enlarges that motif and multiplies it by three, placing them crossed in the centre of the red field.
How it has changed
It has never changed. It was approved in 2005 and there are no documented later modifications.
What it means
Red
the red field of the arms.
Three crossed white swords
the weapon of the arms and the place name, Espadella.
Fun facts
The name drawn literally
Espadella means sword, and the flag draws three. It is one of the most literal cases of heraldic place-naming in the País Valencià: the drawing neither represents nor alludes to the name, it repeats it.
Three swords where the arms have one
The arms approved in 2001 carry a single sword. The 2005 flag multiplies the motif by three and crosses them. Nobody has explained the three, so it is recorded here as an unexplained fact.
A flag without white
The field is entirely red and the swords are white. There is no border, no stripes and no other figure: it is the barest municipal design in the district.
