The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The region of Île-de-France is the one that surrounds Paris. It has no traditional or official flag governed by a rule: its flag is a white field with the logo of the regional council, a red eight-pointed star with the words “Région Île-de-France”.

How it came about

Like many French regions, Île-de-France uses its logo as its flag. It can be seen flying, for instance, at the schools of the region.

The design has changed every time the logo changed. The current version dates from September 2019, when the word “Région” in blue was added to the previous logo.

How it has changed

According to the FOTW flag portal, the region has had several designs, all with the logo of the moment:

  • Until 2000

white flag with a red, white and blue flower, created in 1976.

  • 2000-2005

a blue spiral with an eight-pointed star, on a blue ground with white letters.

  • 2005-2019

the logo, simplified and all in red, on white; it kept the eight-pointed star.

  • Since 2019

the same logo with the word “Région” in blue.

What it means

  • Red eight-pointed star

the 2000 logo used it to represent the eight departments of the region and Europe, and it was kept in the following designs.

  • White ground

it is the usual ground for logo flags of the French regions.

  • Red and blue

they are the colours of the logo.

Fun facts

  1. An abandoned flower

In 2000 the red, white and blue flower of 1976 was dropped because it was only a geographical symbol of the departments and not of a region that wanted to look to the future.

  2. A change of logo, a change of flag

Every time the regional council changes its logo, it prints a new flag. In 2005 it was renewed with an all-red logo and in 2019 the word “Région” was added to it.
