The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Iwate is a greyish blue field with the white emblem in the centre. Iwate, in the north of the main island of Japan, is the second largest prefecture of the country, behind only Hokkaido, and its symbol comes from a single Chinese character.

How it came about

The symbol of Iwate was born to commemorate the construction of the new headquarters of the prefectural government. A public competition open to the whole world was called and the winning design was announced on 10 November 1964, by prefectural notification number 1083. The flag that carries it was declared official a few months later, on 6 March 1965.

How it has changed

It has not changed since 1965.

What it means

  • Emblem

the character 岩, read iwa and meaning rock —the first part of the name of the prefecture—, transformed into a drawing symmetrical from top to bottom.

  • Greyish blue and white

I have not found an official explanation of the colours published by the prefecture.

Fun facts

  1. First the emblem, then the flag

The symbol was presented in November 1964 on the occasion of the new prefectural building, and the flag that shows it was not made official until March 1965.

  2. A character that hides its name

The emblem starts from the kanji 岩: the syllable iwa with which the name of the prefecture begins, and which in Japanese means rock.
