The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Occitanie is red and carries the logo of the region: on the left, a half Occitan cross and some vertical yellow bars, and on the right, the name of the region in white. It is not a historical flag but an institutional one, as with many French regions.

How it came about

The region was born on 1 January 2016, by joining Languedoc-Roussillon and Midi-Pyrénées. The first months it was provisionally called “Languedoc-Roussillon-Midi-Pyrénées” and used a white flag with a logo made only of the name. In June 2016 the name Occitanie was chosen.

For the definitive logo a competition was organised with young talents from the territory, between October and November 2016: 362 entries arrived from 209 candidates. The jury unanimously chose the design by Léa Filipowic, which was presented in January 2017. The flag, red with that logo, was launched in 2017.

How it has changed

It has not changed since 2017. During 2016, in front of the regional council, the traditional flags of Languedoc, which is also that of the counts of Toulouse, and of Roussillon flew together. Today the regional council still flies them alongside the flag of Occitanie.

What it means

  • Half Occitan cross

it is a historical symbol of Occitan culture, and here it appears cut in half.

  • Vertical bars

they recall the bars of the Catalan flag, according to the region itself.

  • Red and yellow

in the region’s own words, red and gold represent the identity of the two regions that were joined.

  • “Pyrénées-Méditerranée”

the motto that accompanies the name and points out that the region runs from the mountains to the sea.

Fun facts

  1. A logo chosen in a competition

The region opened a competition among young people from the territory. 362 entries were received from 209 candidates and the jury chose the design by Léa Filipowic unanimously.

  2. Seven suns of Languedoc-Roussillon

The old region of Languedoc-Roussillon used from 2004 a red flag with seven suns. They alluded to Septimania, the Roman name of the area, whose “seven” is attributed to a Roman legion or to seven cities.

  3. A name of six months

Until June 2016 the region was provisionally called “Languedoc-Roussillon-Midi-Pyrénées”. Afterwards “Occitanie” was chosen.
