The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of the province of Jaén is a green field with the provincial coat of arms in the centre. It is the flag of the Provincial Council, the body that governs the province, and it is one of the youngest provincial flags in Spain.

How it came about

Until 2014 the province had no flag of its own. On 3 March of that year, the plenum of the Provincial Council approved the design, which came out of the institution’s own design department, without consulting anyone outside it. It was then entered in the register of local entities of Andalusia and it was launched on 19 March, the Day of the Province.

How it has changed

It has not changed since it was approved in 2014.

What it means

  • Green

it represents the olive groves, the fields and the natural parks of the province.

  • Coat of arms

four gold and red quarters, surrounded by castles and lions, with a small central oval showing the Santo Rostro, the face of Jesus Christ. It bears above it a closed royal crown.

  • Golden band

below the coat of arms, with the name “Provincia de Jaén”.

Fun facts

  1. A flag for every town

After launching it, the Provincial Council gave a copy to each of the 97 municipalities of the province. But by June 2014 only 46 had hung it up, and some said they did not even have a flagpole.

  2. A green that not everyone liked

There were critics who said the green was too loud, that another shade would have better represented the olive tree, and that the design forgot the mining and the industry of the province.
