How it is described

The flag in the words of vexillology and heraldry.

Vexillological description

It is a rectangular field with a 2:3 ratio in dark green, with no divisions, and the coat of arms of the province in the centre.

Field (the cloth of the flag)
dark green and plain, with no stripes or ornaments.
Stripes
it has none; the green reaches from the hoist (the edge it is raised from) to the fly (the edge that waves).
Coat of arms
occupies the centre; it bears a royal crown above and two branches, one of palm and one of laurel, at the sides.

The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The image on this page is the flag that the Provincial Council of Lleida used for years: a dark green field with the coat of arms of the province in the centre. Today it is out of date, because the institution already uses a different one, so it is best read as a historical flag.

How it came about

There is no clear date for the flag, but there is one for the coat of arms it carries. It was approved on 28 December 1897 and ratified on 14 April 1898. The flag, according to the sources consulted, consists simply of that coat of arms on a green ground.

How it has changed

The Council replaced this green flag with another which, according to the FOTW flag portal, has horizontal yellow and red stripes, those of the Catalan flag, with a light blue lozenge. I have not found any rule approving it nor any free image of it, so it is not shown here.

What it means

The meaning lies in the coat of arms:

  • Green

the ground of the historical flag, with no documented official meaning.

  • Nine quarters

the coat of arms is divided into nine parts, one for each historical judicial district: Solsona, Pallars, Arán, Seo de Urgel, Lleida, Tremp, Borjas, Urgel and Cervera.

Fun facts

  1. A coat of arms that is a map of the court districts

The nine parts of the provincial coat of arms represent neither kings nor battles, but the nine judicial districts into which the province was divided at the time it was approved.

  2. A flag that changed its look

The green flag with the coat of arms was replaced by another of yellow and red stripes with a light blue lozenge, which the Council uses today according to FOTW.
