The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Rojals is a field of three horizontal stripes —blue, white and yellow— with the coat of arms on the middle one. It is among the simplest in the Bajo Segura, but the coat of arms it carries on top has three distinct readings.

How it came about

Rojals is a municipality of the Bajo Segura. Its coat of arms was made official by Resolution of 12 May 1986, of the Dirección General de Administración Local, published in DOGV number 396. The flag came shortly after, by the Resolution of 29 May 1987, of the same body.

The coat of arms is divided in two. The first part bears the keys of Saint Peter, in a cross and accompanied by two ears of wheat: the keys are the attribute of the saint, the local patron, and the ears allude to the economy of the municipality, nearly half of which is occupied by the irrigated fields. The second part is the three-arched bridge.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 1987 and there are no documented later modifications.

What it means

  • Blue, white and yellow

the three stripes of the field.

  • Coat of arms on the white stripe

    the municipal arms.

  • Keys of Saint Peter

the attribute of the saint, patron of the town.

  • Two ears of wheat

the agrarian economy of the municipality, almost half of it irrigated fields.

  • Three-arched bridge

one more element of the local coat of arms.

Fun facts

  1. Half the municipality is orchard

The two ears of wheat on the coat of arms represent the economy of the municipality, almost half of which is occupied by irrigated fields, where citrus fruit and vegetables predominate. It is not agrarian decoration: it is a fact about land use.

  2. Keys in a cross, not vertical

The keys of Saint Peter are set in a saltire, one above the other in a cross. That is how the keys of heaven are drawn: two crossed keys, the upper one with its bow to the left.

  3. The coat of arms has three elements in two quarters

The divided coat of arms bears, in the upper part, the keys and the ears of wheat; in the lower, the three-arched bridge. That is three elements in two quarters, and the patron saint is only one of them: the saint takes up no more room than the bridge.
