The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of the province of Málaga is a white field surrounded by a light blue border, with the coat of arms of the province in the centre. It has a seafaring origin: it copies the one carried by the ships registered in Málaga.

How it came about

In the nineteenth century, each “maritime province” had a flag for its ships, like a registration. That of Málaga was white with a blue border. The Provincial Council took it for its own flag and placed the coat of arms of the province in the centre. According to the FOTW flag portal, this happened in January 1978.

It is an unofficial flag: neither it nor the coat of arms were ever officially registered, according to that same source.

How it has changed

There are no documented earlier versions of this flag.

What it means

  • White with blue border

it comes from the registration flag of the ships of the maritime province of Málaga. It has no official explanation.

  • Coat of arms

it gathers in two halves the symbols of the city of Málaga and those of the province. One of them has twelve red and yellow stripes, one for each judicial district of the province apart from that of the capital. That part was added during the Second Republic.

Fun facts

  1. A flag copied from the ships

The provincial flag was not invented from scratch: it was taken from the registration flag of the ships of Málaga.

  2. Twelve stripes, twelve judicial districts

The red and yellow stripes of the provincial coat of arms number twelve on purpose: each one represents one of the judicial districts of the province, except that of the capital.
