The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of the province of Pontevedra is divided on the diagonal: white at the top left and blue at the bottom right. In the centre it bears the arms of the province, with a three-arched bridge over the waves.

How it came about

Nobody knows when it was created. According to the FOTW flag portal, it is a historic flag with no documented adoption date. The oldest thing known about it is that the rules on honours and distinctions of the Provincial Council mentioned it in its article 28. Those rules were approved by the Ministry of the Interior on 9 October 1973.

It is the flag of the Provincial Council, and no recent rule regulating it is on record.

How it has changed

No earlier versions are known. The version described in the rules also has a golden border with fringe and, around the coat of arms, the name of the institution: “Excma. Deputación Provincial de Pontevedra”.

What it means

The flag has no official explanation. What can be described is its coat of arms:

  • White and blue

the two halves of the flag, divided on the diagonal. There is no official explanation of the division.

  • Bridge over waves

three arches over blue and silver waves.

  • Cross over steps and castles

a cross in the centre, flanked by three towers.

  • Closed royal crown

    above the coat of arms.

Fun facts

  1. A flag that does not meet current Galician rules

According to FOTW, the flag has not been adapted to the 1992 and 1998 decrees of the Xunta de Galicia, which fix how the symbols of local entities must be made.

  2. A flag with the name written on it

The version described in the rules carries the name of the institution written around the coat of arms, something unusual in a flag.
