The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is light blue with the coat of arms of the city in the centre. The coat of arms has no lions or crowns: it is almost a drawing of the city, with its hills, its wall and the river that crosses it.

How it came about

After the war in Bosnia (1992-1995), Sarajevo renewed its symbols. The city Assembly first approved a provisional decision on 28 March 1998, and the definitive one on 21 November 2000. That rule says the flag is light blue, with the coat of arms in the centre and a 1:2 ratio.

How it has changed

The coat of arms of the city has changed with every regime, and the flag with it.

  1. 1965-1990

Red flag with the socialist-era coat of arms: red wall, green river and a red five-pointed star among the rooftops.

  2. 1990s

During the war the socialist star is removed and a golden fleur-de-lis is put in its place. The lower part of the coat of arms becomes blue.

  3. Current flag of Sarajevo: light blue with the city coat of arms in the centre

    2000

Light blue flag with the current coat of arms, with no star or fleur-de-lis.

What it means

The 2000 rule explains the coat of arms part by part.

  • Green triangles

the typical rooftops of the city, which are also the hills that surround it.

  • Wall with gates

the walls of the city, its symbol.

  • River with bridge

the valley the river runs through, with the bridge on which Sarajevo was built.

Fun facts

  1. A coat of arms that was already 35 years old

The drawing of the rooftops, the wall and the bridge comes from the coat of arms of 1965. In 2000 the political additions were removed and the colours changed.

  2. From the star to the fleur-de-lis

In the war of the 1990s the red star of the socialist coat of arms was replaced by a golden fleur-de-lis, the symbol of the old kings of Bosnia.

  3. Vertical or horizontal

The rule does not say how the flag should be hung, and in the city it is seen both horizontally and vertically.
