The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of the province of Segovia is a carmine field, an intense red, with the provincial arms in the centre. It has been official since 1986.

How it came about

The arms came first. The Royal Academy of History approved them on 16 December 1952 and they were definitively adopted in 1956. Later, the government of Castile and León approved the flag by a decree of 12 June 1986, published in the official gazette of the community on 25 June 1986.

How it has changed

It has not changed since 1986.

What it means

The flag has no official explanation of the colour. The arms, on the other hand, bring together the head towns of the judicial districts of the province:

  • Carmine

the ground. The decree defines it with very precise technical measurements of the colour.

  • Castle

    Sepúlveda.

  • Horse

    Cuéllar.

  • Trout

    Riaza.

  • Lilies

Santa María la Real de Nieva.

  • Aqueduct with a crowned head

    Segovia, the capital.

Fun facts

  1. A colour defined by numbers

The 1986 decree does not settle for saying “carmine red”: it gives exact technical values of lightness, chroma and hue so that all the flags come out identical.

  2. The same proportions as the flag of Castile and León

The flag has a proportion of 76 to 99, the same as the flag of the autonomous community of Castile and León.
