The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of the province of Seville is a green field with the arms of the Provincial Council in the centre. On the arms there is King Saint Ferdinand seated, with two saints at the sides, and below it the word NO8DO. A collar of ten small shields surrounds the whole ensemble.

How it came about

The design is much older than its approval: it goes back to the late 1920s. However, it was not official until almost a hundred years later. The Directorate General of Local Administration of the Andalusian Regional Government recognised it by a resolution of 17 December 2014, published on 30 December 2014 in the Andalusian official gazette. In practice, that resolution put on record a symbol that was already in use.

How it has changed

It has not changed in any documented way since its origin.

What it means

The flag has no official explanation of the colour. This is what its arms show:

  • Green

the colour of the ground, in a specific tone, Pantone 3415 C.

  • Saint Ferdinand seated

the king who conquered Seville in 1248, accompanied by Saint Isidore and Saint Leander standing, two saints of the city.

  • NO8DO

the motto of Seville, which appears below the arms.

  • Collar of ten shields

each one is the arms of a municipality of the province.

Fun facts

  1. A twentieth-century flag recognised in 2014

Although the design comes from the late twenties, until December 2014 it had no official resolution fixing it.

  2. It looks the same on both sides

The 2014 resolution says that the arms go centred on both sides of the flag, and sets the official sizes, from 1.50 by 1.00 metres up to 3.50 by 2.25 metres.
