The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Gaibiel puts a tree and a hare on a white stripe, between two red ones. The hare wears a collar, a detail that almost no other municipal coat of arms in the Valencian Country carries.

How it came about

Gaibiel is a municipality in the Alt Palància, in the province of Valencia. Its coat of arms was approved by Resolution of 14 December 2000, of the conseller de Justícia i Administracions Públiques, published in DOGV number 3,920.

The tree is a traditional element of the coat of arms of the town. The hare, on the other hand, comes from the arms of the Carrillo, old barons of Gaibiel: it is a reminder of the house that lorded the place, not a symbol of the landscape.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 2000 and there are no documented later modifications.

Fun facts

  1. A hare with a collar

Almost no heraldic hare wears a collar. This one does, and it is the feature that identifies the house of the Carrillo, the barons who were lords of the place. The collar turns a wild animal into a family piece.

  2. Two trees of a different origin

In the same coat of arms, the tree and the hare come from different places. The tree is local tradition; the hare is a reminder of the noble line that possessed it. It is a mix of what the place means and what whoever commanded it meant.

  3. Red top and bottom, white in the middle

The field is divided horizontally into three: red, white, red. The pale stripe is thus separated and serves as a ground for the two figures. It is a cheap way of gaining contrast without spending ink.
