The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

Sør-Trøndelag was a county in central Norway, with its capital in Trondheim. Its flag was yellow with two axes and an archbishop’s cross in red. It stopped being used in 2018, when the county merged with its northern neighbour.

How it came about

Like most Norwegian counties, Sør-Trøndelag had a flag that repeated its coat of arms. It adopted it on 9 December 1983, and took it from an emblem the archbishopric of Trondheim had already used in the 15th century.

How it has changed

It did not change while the county existed. On 1 January 2018 Sør-Trøndelag and Nord-Trøndelag merged into a single county, Trøndelag, after a referendum, and the flag stopped being official.

What it means

  • Axes

the axe of Saint Olaf, the holy king of Norway, who also appears in the royal coat of arms of the country.

  • Archbishop’s cross

the archbishopric of Trondheim, the seat of the Church in Norway during the Middle Ages.

Fun facts

  1. A coat of arms of bishops

The figures come from an emblem the archbishopric of Trondheim used in the 15th century, when it was the seat of the Norwegian Church.

  2. Saint Olaf on three flags

The holy king appears on several flags on this site: here with his axes, on that of Trondheim with his rose, and in the story of Sarpsborg, the town he founded.

  3. United after two centuries

The two Trøndelag counties had been separate for more than two hundred years when they reunited in 2018, after a referendum held two years earlier.
