The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of South Gyeongsang is white with a four-colour circle that comes out like a sun. Ulsan belonged to this province until 1997. The current design was approved on 22 November 1999, and the provincial website sums it up like this: nature and people fused into a rising celestial body.

How it came about

The province launched its mark in the late nineties, when almost the whole country was renewing its symbols for the new century. The emblem is a circle with a white centre and four coloured arcs; below it goes the word 경상남도. Each colour has an official explanation.

How it has changed

Just two flags: the geometric one of 1974 and the current sun.

the passionate spirit of those who love their province and their country.

  • Green on the left

    nature and industry in harmony.

  • Yellow on the right

the fertile land, the basis of life.

  • Blue below

the clean waters of the Nakdong river and of the South Sea.

  • White centre

the strength of the province, shining like a rising sun.

  • The whole circle

union to develop the whole territory equally in the age of the Pacific.

Fun facts

  1. Its old flag was an acronym

In 1974 the flag drew neither a sun nor a map: it placed two letters of the Korean alphabet, ㄱ and ㄴ, the initials of Gyeongsang Nam-do, turned into blue and yellow shapes.

  2. Gyeongsang is two cities

The name of the region was formed in 1314 by joining the first syllable of Gyeongju with that of Sangju; the North and South provinces, heirs to that, still share it.
