The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag associated with Haut-Rhin is a red field with a golden band on the diagonal and six crowns around it. It is the coat of arms of the department, and it has been flown as a flag in Colmar and other towns since 2000.

How it came about

Haut-Rhin is a French department in Alsace, with its capital in Colmar. The flag corresponds to its coat of arms, and it has been used as a banner in various towns of the department since 2000.

How it has changed

The important change is not in the design but in the territory: since 2021 Haut-Rhin merged with Bas-Rhin to create the European Collectivity of Alsace. The department ceased to exist as an administrative entity.

The flag, on the other hand, has not changed: it is still the same golden diagonal band with the six crowns.

  • Six crowns

golden, three on each side of the band.

Fun facts

  1. The department no longer exists

Haut-Rhin merged with Bas-Rhin in 2021 and gave way to the European Collectivity of Alsace. Its flag is therefore that of an extinct department: a case that vexillological databases usually have to mark as historical.

  2. An armorial flag, not a regional one

Haut-Rhin is one of the few French departments that did have a flag of its own, and its design is the coat of arms laid on the field, with no reinterpretation. The six crowns are the key of the shield.

  3. The diagonal breaks the symmetry

Almost all flags have a vertical or horizontal axis. The golden diagonal band is the exception: it crosses the field from corner to corner and forces the coat of arms to be read in motion.
