The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of the province of Badajoz is a blue field with the provincial coat of arms in the centre. It is a simple flag, used by the Provincial Council, but it has no official approval: the Ministry of Public Administrations considers it unofficial.

How it came about

The flag is the coat of arms of the province placed on a blue ground, the same blue as the field of the coat of arms. The coat of arms was adopted on 27 October 1868 and is described as: a silver column with a scroll bearing the motto «Plus Ultra» and a red lion rampant beside it. We did not find an agreement fixing the date of the flag.

How it has changed

No earlier versions are known.

What it means

The meaning lies in the coat of arms:

  • Blue ground

the colour of the field of the coat of arms.

  • Silver column

the column of Hercules, which according to legend marked the end of the known world.

  • Motto «Plus Ultra»

it means “beyond” and is the motto of Charles I of Spain.

  • Red lion

    it accompanies the column, standing.

Fun facts

  1. A motto to go the opposite way

Charles I adopted «Plus Ultra» (“beyond”) as his personal motto, turning the old warning «Non plus ultra», “nothing beyond”, inside out. According to tradition that warning was written on the columns of Hercules, in the Strait of Gibraltar.

  2. An unofficial flag

According to the list of the Ministry of Public Administrations, the flag of the province of Badajoz has no official status, although it is used as the banner of the Provincial Council.
