The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of the province of Cádiz is green, with the provincial coat of arms in the centre and a border of alternating castles and lions. It is the official flag of the Provincial Council of Cádiz and one of the most eye-catching in Spain for the number of figures it gathers together.

How it came about

The plenum of the Council approved the flag on 19 November 2008. A decree made it official on 12 January 2009 and it was published in the Andalusian official bulletin on 23 January 2009. It has a ratio of 2:3 and a green corresponding to Pantone 348 C.

The coat of arms in the centre is older: it was adopted in 1886 and modified in 1927. The Council recovered it for its traditional use when it approved the flag.

How it has changed

No earlier documented versions of the flag are known. The current one, from 2008, is the first official.

What it means

Each part of the flag has a clear function:

  • Green ground

the colour chosen to represent the province.

  • Border of castles and lions

the symbols of Castile and of León, which link Cádiz to the old kingdoms of the Crown of Castile.

  • Provincial coat of arms

formed by the symbols of the twelve judicial districts of the province, with references to Cádiz, Jerez de la Frontera or Algeciras.

  • Hercules

a figure from mythology, considered the founder of the city of Cádiz, who appears in the centre of the coat of arms.

  • Columns and the motto Plus Ultra

the columns of Hercules and the motto “beyond”.

Fun facts

  1. Twelve coats of arms in one

The coat of arms in the centre brings together symbols from the twelve judicial districts of the province, so it is almost a heraldic map of Cádiz.

  2. A recovered coat of arms

The coat of arms was adopted in 1886 and modified in 1927. The Council rehabilitated it, that is, it used it officially again, when it created the flag.

  3. Hercules founded Cádiz

According to mythology, the hero Hercules founded the city of Cádiz. That is why he appears in the centre of the provincial coat of arms.
