How it is described

The flag in the words of vexillology and heraldry.

Vexillological description

It is a rectangular field with a 2:3 ratio with the bars of the senyera and the coat of arms of the province in the centre. It is the unofficial version used in practice.

Stripes
nine equal horizontal bands, five yellow and four red, alternating from top to bottom.
Coat of arms
centred over the stripes; inside it there is a lozenge of red and white waves.
Flagpole and fly side
the bars run uninterrupted to the two vertical edges; the flagpole is the pole it is hoisted from.

What it carries

Each element and how many of the 1,390 flags in the catalogue carry it. In yellow, the rarest.

The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The province of Girona has no official flag. What is usually seen is the senyera, the red and yellow bars of Catalonia, with a lozenge in the centre that recalls the coat of arms of the province. The image on this page is an unofficial version made with those elements.

How it came about

What does exist is a historic coat of arms, of unknown adoption date. The shield, of French shape, carries the four red and five gold bars of Catalonia, and in the centre a lozenge with red and white waves. Oak and laurel branches surround it, with a ducal crown of emeralds, rubies and pearls.

The informal flag is simply the Catalan flag with that coat of arms in the centre. It has no official recognition: the sources that consult the official manuals of the State, of 1992, say that Girona has no flag of its own.

How it has changed

No earlier official versions are known. There are some drawings of a flag with the coat of arms in the centre, but they have no date and no official recognition.

What it means

The flag combines two elements:

  • Red and yellow bars

the senyera, the emblem of the counts of Barcelona and the kings of Aragon, linked to all of Catalonia. More information on the flag of Catalonia.

  • Lozenge with waves

the coat of arms of the province, which appears in the centre and which has no documented explanation.
