The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Ayacucho is a light blue field with the coat of arms of the region in the centre. The coat of arms bears a stepped golden tower and is surrounded by a baroque frame.

How it came about

Ayacucho is a region in southern Peru. No approval date is recorded in the reference file.

Inside the coat of arms, against a blue sky, stands a stepped golden tower of six tiers with a black door at the base. At the top, a white mass carries a small figure on top of it. Below, a green ground. All of it is surrounded by a red and gold frame of baroque shapes.

How it has changed

No earlier versions are documented.

What it means

  • Light blue

the background of the field, plain and in a single colour.

  • Tower

stepped, in gold, of six tiers, with a black door at the base.

  • White figure

at the top of the coat of arms, over a white mass.

  • Green ground

the base on which the tower rises.

  • Frame

a baroque ornament in red and gold surrounding the whole coat of arms.

Fun facts

  1. The frame weighs almost as much as the coat of arms

The red and gold ornament takes up almost as much as the shield it surrounds. On a small flag the frame would be seen more than the figures inside it.

  2. A stepped tower, not a fortress

The tower is not square-plan with battlements: it has six stepped tiers. That shape does not correspond to a European fortification but to a different kind of construction.

  3. A single background colour

Outside the coat of arms, the field is light blue with no division at all. It is one of the simplest regional flags in terms of ground: one colour and one centred emblem.
