The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of the province of Toledo is a green field with a striking coat of arms in the centre: a black two-headed eagle, with the Pillars of Hercules at the sides and an imperial crown above. It has been official since 2013.

How it came about

The new symbols of the province were approved unanimously on 19 October 2012. They were redesigned to distinguish them from those of the city of Toledo: the main difference is that the provincial arms carry the Pillars of Hercules and the city’s carry kings of arms. The Government of Castile-La Mancha made them official by a decree of 13 May 2013, published on 29 May. They were premiered on 18 October 2013.

How it has changed

The previous flag already had the green ground, though some historical sources said it was red. The novelty of 2013 is the redrawn arms.

Fun facts

  1. Embroidered by students

The embroidered versions of the flag were made by students of the “Fray Juan de los Ángeles” Technical School, in Lagartera, a village known for its embroidery.

  2. Pillars of Hercules so as not to be confused with the city

So that it would not be confused with the flag of the city of Toledo, the province added the Pillars of Hercules instead of the kings of arms.
