The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

Torre-xiva owes its name to a tower, and its flag puts the tower in the middle and the water at the sides, in wavy bands. It is the arms of the village, drawn whole on the field, drawn whole on the field.

How it came about

Torre-xiva is a municipality of Alt Palància, in the province of Valencia. Its arms were approved by Resolution of 20 December 2001, of the conseller de Justícia i Administracions Públiques, published in DOGV number 4,182. The flag came three and a half years later, by Resolution of 22 April 2005, published in DOGV number 5,008.

The arms, which the village had already used since the end of the last century, carry a tower. It is a canting element: a drawing that sounds like the place name. The flag keeps the tower in the centre and adds the bands of water at the sides.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 2005 and there are no documented later modifications.

What it means

  • Blue

    the ground of the field.

  • Tower in the centre

the municipal arms, and the place name Torre-xiva.

  • Wavy white bands

the water, the gullies that surround the settlement.

Fun facts

  1. A canting element

The tower on the arms does not represent a fact: it is a canting element, a drawing that sounds like the name of the village, like the lion of Aielo or the briar of Rugat. Valencian municipal heraldry is full of these plays with the place name.

  2. The water goes to both sides, not below

The eight wavy white bands are split four by the hoist and four on the fly, leaving the centre for the tower. It is a way of surrounding the main element with water, instead of putting the water in a horizontal stripe as is more usual.

  3. Two charters, two settlements

The name of Torre-xiva comes from two distinct nuclei: the tower and Xiva, an isolated farmhouse out in the fields. The arms only draw the tower; the part of the place name that means farmhouse has no figure of its own.
