The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Kanagawa is white with a red drawing in the centre. That drawing looks like the letter M, but it is the kanji “ka” of its name, very stylised. It uses red and white, the national colours of Japan.

How it came about

Kanagawa approved its emblem in November 1948, shortly after the war, and the flag has not changed since. There is no flag law: as in almost all the Japanese prefectures, the standard is simply the emblem placed on a field. Red and white, the colours of the country, were chosen because the port of Yokohama, which is in this prefecture, was for a long time the great gateway to Japan.

How it has changed

The flag of Kanagawa has been the same since its emblem of 1948.

What it means

  • Red (the kanji “ka”)

the first syllable of “Kanagawa”, drawn in a stylised way; it looks like a Latin M.

  • White

the ground; together with the red they are the national colours of Japan.

  • Red and white deliberately chosen

for Yokohama, the historic port of access to the country.

Fun facts

  1. A flag without law

Kanagawa has no law regulating its flag. The standard is in fact: the emblem approved in 1948, used as a flag by custom.

  2. It looks like an M

A book of flags described the drawing as a stylised Latin M, but it is really the kanji “ka”, the first syllable of the name.

  3. A sailing venue for some Olympics

The sailing events of the 1964 Tokyo Games were held off the coast of Kanagawa, at Enoshima, the same year the neighbouring flag of Tokyo was adopted.
