The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Ulsan, the great port and industrial city of the southeast of South Korea, is white with a blue-green dragon flying with a red pearl in its mouth. The animal comes from a local legend.

How it came about

The city adopted the dragon emblem on 1 January 1995. On 15 July 1997 Ulsan split off from the province of South Gyeongsang to become a autonomous metropolitan city, and the flag only changed the word written: from 울산, Ulsan, to 울산광역시, Ulsan metropolitan city.

How it has changed

Three flags in forty years: the one with stars of 1980, the premiere of the dragon in 1995, and the current one, which adds a word to the name.

  • Red pearl

the jewel that grants wishes; the dragon catching it in flight sums up the drive of the city.

  • Whole

an advanced city of industry and culture in the Pacific era, where nature and people go hand in hand, according to the official explanation.

Fun facts

  1. Five stars that counted plans

The 1980 flag carried five golden stars in a V shape: they represented the five-year economic development plans and the 500,000 inhabitants of the city at the time.

  2. The smallest reform of all

The elevation to metropolitan city in 1997 did not change a single pixel of the dragon: the flag only added the word 광역시 to the name.

  3. The old colours were a slogan

In the 1980 flag, the blue was the hope of a city in development, the white peace and the green eternal growth.
