The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Jacksonville, in Florida, has two stripes. On top, Andrew Jackson on horseback before a rising sun; below, on orange, the map of Duval County. Jacksonville is named after Jackson, general and later President of the United States.

How it came about

In 1968 the city of Jacksonville and the county of Duval merged into a single government. The old flag, of 1914, had become outdated, and the city called a competition to make a new one. Don Bozeman’s design won, adopted on 24 February 1976.

How it has changed

Jacksonville has had two flags.

the statue of Andrew Jackson, which gives the city its name, and his history.

  • Rising sun

    optimism at the future.

  • County map and San Juan river

the community that the united city and county form.

  • Orange

the colour of Florida, the ‘sunshine state’.

Fun facts

  1. Approved only half way by the experts

In a 2004 survey by the North American Vexillological Association on 150 United States city flags, it came 38th, with 5.03 points out of 10. It was marked down for having letters and for being complicated.

  2. The second best in Florida

In that same survey only one Florida city scored better than Jacksonville.

  3. City and county at once

Since 1968 Jacksonville and Duval County are almost the same government, which is why the map of the whole county takes up half the flag.
