The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Vieira do Minho has four quarters, that is four rectangles, yellow and black, with the arms in the centre. On them appear three scallop shells, a name turned into a drawing.

How it came about

The arms and the flag were published in the Diário do Governo on 26 April 1940, according to Flags of the World. Vieira do Minho is a town, hence the quarters and the crown of four towers. It shares the yellow and black of Viana do Castelo and Portalegre, although there is no relation between them.

How it has changed

No earlier version is known. In 1999 a variant with eight gores was documented, which does not follow the rule.

What it means

  • Yellow and black

the quarters. The sources consulted do not explain them.

  • Three scallop shells

the name of the village, because vieira means scallop shell.

  • Red pomegranates and corn cobs

the fruits and crops of the area.

  • Wavy silver band

Flags of the World reads it as the river Miño.

  • White scroll

“Vila de Vieira do Minho”, or just “Vieira do Minho” on the quartered flag.

Fun facts

  1. Canting arms

A coat of arms that draws the name of the place is called canting. The scallop shells and the name of the village match.

  2. A town with a city flag

Flags of the World recorded in 1999 a variant with eight black and yellow gores, the ground proper to a city, although Vieira do Minho is only a town.
