The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Albalat de la Ribera is a blue field with five silver waves and a golden boat in the centre. The boat is not decorative: it was a medieval public service.

How it came about

Albalat de la Ribera is a municipality in Ribera Alta, in the province of Valencia. Its coat of arms was approved by the Resolution of 17 October 2001, of the conseller de Justícia i Administracions Públiques, published in DOGV number 4,133. The flag came seven years later, by the Resolution of 18 November 2008, of the first vice-president and conseller de Presidència, published in DOCV number 5,907.

The coat of arms alludes to the passage of the Albalat ferry, a medieval privilege which, together with the bridges of Cullera and Alzira, was one of the linking points of the two banks of the Júcar. That is: the boat was the way of crossing the river before the bridge existed.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 2008 and there are no documented later modifications.

What it means

  • Blue

    the colour of the field.

  • Five wavy fesses of silver

    the water of the Júcar.

  • Golden lateen-sailed boat

the Albalat ferry crossing, a medieval privilege to cross the river.

Fun facts

  1. Crossing the Júcar by boat before by bridge

The Albalat ferry was a medieval privilege: whoever could use it had permission to cross the Júcar. Together with the bridges of Cullera and Alzira, it was one of the points that joined the two banks of the river. The flag recalls a transport service, not a legend.

  2. A lateen sail, not a round one

The boat carries a lateen sail —a triangular sail— and not a round one. It is the kind of sail used in medieval Mediterranean navigation, and it is a detail that sets this boat apart from those on other Valencian coats of arms.

  3. The flag is seven years newer than the coat of arms

Coat of arms approved in 2001, flag in 2008. The difference is not exceptional in the comarca: many Valencian municipalities legalised their arms long before the flag.
