The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Vizela has eight triangles, yellow and blue, and in the centre arms bearing the Roman goddess Minerva. Vizela is a city of the district of Braga, in the north of Portugal. It was a municipality in the Middle Ages, lost that status and recovered it in 1998.

How it came about

The concejo (the municipality) of Vizela was created in 1361 and suppressed in 1408. For centuries its neighbours asked to recover it, and they succeeded in 1998. At the same time, Vizela went from town to city. The flags were premiered during that year’s festivities. According to Flags of the World, neither the flag nor the arms have been officially approved: there is no date of adoption.

How it has changed

All these 1998 versions remained unapproved.

  1. March 1998

Festivities flag: four yellow and blue triangles, with “Concelho de Vizela” and without arms.

  2. 1998

Eight triangles with the arms. The crown and the scroll varied: “Cidade”, “Vila” or “Concelho de Vizela”.

  3. Current flag of Vizela

    Since 1998

Mismo fondo, con corona de cinco torres y cinta «Vizela».

What it means

  • Eight yellow and blue triangles

the ground that in Portugal corresponds to a city (towns use four quarters).

  • Minerva

Roman goddess, holding the head of the Gorgon. I have not found why she was chosen.

  • Three-arched bridge

with the tiny text “Vizela Romana”.

  • Two blue shields with five bezants

like the quinas of the flag of Portugal.

  • Mural crown of five towers

    the sign of a city.

Fun facts

  1. Without a municipality there is no city

For years the neighbours rejected the title of city without first recovering the municipality. Their motto was “Sem concelho não há cidade”.

  2. A crown reserved for Lisbon

In 1998 a golden crown of five towers was used, which in Portugal is reserved for Lisbon.
