How it is described

The flag in the words of vexillology and heraldry.

Vexillological description

It is a rectangular field (the field is the cloth of the flag) with a 2:3 ratio in blue, with the quarter on the flagpole side in red. The flagpole is the pole it is hoisted on.

Red stripe
it takes up the quarter of the field against the flagpole and runs from top to bottom.
Three triangles
they come out of that stripe towards the fly —the free side—; the middle one is the longest and ends in the shape of a fleur-de-lis.
Lion
yellow, upright and centred on the red stripe, with a fleur-de-lis on the front paw.
No coat of arms
it carries no drawn coat of arms on top nor any border.

What it carries

The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Albalate del Arzobispo is a blue field with the quarter next to the flagpole in red. From that stripe three triangles run towards the fly side, and a yellow lion with a fleur-de-lis stays inside the red area.

How it came about

Albalate del Arzobispo is a municipality in the province of Toledo, in Castilla-La Mancha, in the plain of La Mancha. Its flag was approved on 11 July 2002.

The design transfers to the cloth the pieces of the coat of arms, but places them so that the red occupies a vertical stripe at the flagpole and the triangles point to the free side. It is an asymmetric composition: the visual weight is on the pole, not in the centre.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 2002 and there are no documented later modifications.

What it means

  • Blue

the background of the field, three quarters of it.

  • Red stripe

the quarter of the field against the flagpole, from top to bottom.

  • Three triangles

they come out of the red stripe towards the fly side. The middle one is the longest and ends in a fleur-de-lis.

  • Lion

yellow, upright and centred on the red stripe, with a fleur-de-lis on the front paw.

Fun facts

  1. The coat of arms without a coat of arms

Albalate del Arzobispo has no coat of arms: its figures —the lion, the fleur-de-lis, the tower— are drawn directly on the field. The three triangles serve as a geometric support and the lion lives inside the red stripe. It is a flag that replaces the shield with the composition.

  2. Deliberate asymmetry

Almost all flags are symmetric with respect to the flagpole. This one concentrates the colour on the pole side and leaves the fly in blue, with the triangles as the only transition. The eye reads the flag from the pole outwards, not the other way round.

  3. The fleur-de-lis twice

The fleur-de-lis appears twice: as the finial of the middle triangle and as an ornament on the lion’s front paw. It is the most repeated element and the one that gives its name to the kind of flower used in the design.
