The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Alcoletge is a yellow field with a black castle in the centre and a black elm on each side.

How it came about

Alcoletge is a municipality in the comarca of Segrià, in the province of Lleida. Its flag was approved on 26 May 2000.

The castle in the centre is a canting element: the name of the town comes from the Arabic castellet, ‘little castle’. The two elms flank the castle.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 2000 and there are no documented later modifications.

Fun facts

  1. The name of the town is the name of the castle

Alcoletge comes from the Arabic castellet, ‘little castle’. The flag says so without words: a castle in the centre, with its door open. It is a canting element in the most literal sense, the name drawn.

  2. Two elms, one in each lateral third

The trees are not next to the castle but in the centre of the lateral thirds, with the castle between the two. The composition is symmetric and of three pieces, not two: centre and ends.

  3. Castle and trees in black

All three figures are the same black on the yellow. By using only one colour for what is drawn, the design depends solely on the shape of the silhouettes, and those silhouettes are measured: the castle takes up three quarters of the height and each elm a third.
