The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Algorfa is a field divided into two vertical halves with two different figures: the cross of Saint James on one side, the tower on the other. Each half recalls a different lord of the town.

How it came about

Algorfa is a municipality in Baix Segura, in the province of Alicante. Its coat of arms is one of the oldest legalised by the Generalitat: it was approved by Decree of 3 October 1957, published in BOE number 272. The flag came fifty years later, by the Resolution of 27 April 2007, of the conseller de Justícia, Interior i Administracions Públiques, published in DOGV number 5,523.

The coat of arms is divided in two. The first partition, with the cross of Saint James, recalls that in 1272, after the conquest, Algorfa passed to the Order of Saint James during Castilian rule. The second, with the castle, is that of the Masquefa, who were lords afterwards. The flag transfers both figures to two equal halves.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 2007 and there are no documented later modifications.

What it means

  • White

the half next to the flagpole, where the cross is.

  • Red cross of Saint James

the first partition, the passage to the Order of Saint James in 1272.

  • Blue

    the fly half.

  • White tower

the castle, the arms of the Mosquera.

Fun facts

  1. Half a century between coat of arms and flag

The coat of arms of Algorfa was approved by decree in 1957, when the Generalitat did not yet exist. The flag was not approved until 2007. Fifty years of official arms with no legalised cloth: it is probably the most extreme case in the whole País Valencià.

  2. Each half recalls a different lord

The cross of Saint James comes from 1272, when the town passed to that military order. The tower comes from the Mosquera, who were lords later. The flag splits the field in two so that each figure takes up a whole half: it is a coat of arms taken apart.

  3. Saint James appears twice in the comarca

The scallop —the shell of Saint Hyacinth—, symbol of Saint James, is on the coat of arms of Albatera and also on that of Formentera del Segura, both in Baix Segura. Saint James is the patron of half the district.
