How it is described

The flag in the words of vexillology and heraldry.

Vexillological description

It is a rectangular field with a 2:3 ratio, divided horizontally: red above, green below, separated by a thick white stripe —a band of colour— that is bent.

White stripe
it makes two unequal peaks, like mountains, and runs the whole length of the field from side to side.
Castles
three yellow ones, with turrets, on the green half, next to the flagpole, which is the mast side.
Sun
yellow with a human face, at the top right, over the red half.

What it carries

Each element and how many of the 1,390 flags in the catalogue carry it. In yellow, the rarest.

The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Aller is a field divided horizontally: red above, green below, with a thick white bent stripe in the middle. Over the green, three castles; over the red, a sun with a face.

How it came about

Aller is a council in the Asturian mountains, in the comarca of the same name. Its flag takes the symbols of its coat of arms and spreads them over two coloured halves.

How it has changed

No earlier versions are documented.

What it means

  • Red

    the upper half.

  • Green

    the lower half.

  • White stripe

thick, running the whole length of the field from side to side, making two unequal peaks like mountains.

  • Three yellow castles

with turrets, on the green half, next to the flagpole.

  • Sun with a face

yellow, at the top right, over the red half.

Fun facts

  1. The white stripe is shaped like mountains

The band separating red from green is not straight: it makes two unequal peaks. It is the only element of the flag that does not come from the coat of arms, and the one that makes it recognisable at a distance.

  2. A sun with a human face

The sun on the upper half has a face. It is an old motif: in heraldry the personified sun often appears facing forwards, and not as the radiating sun of modern symbols.

  3. Everything comes from the coat of arms except the stripe

The three castles and the sun with a face are the symbols of the coat of arms of Aller. The flag adds no new figures: it only spreads them over two coloured halves and adds the stripe that does the work of a mountain.
