The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Alt Àneu carries no coat of arms. It turns its figures into four angles of colour: a white cross divides the field into four parts, and in the corners appear two yellow angles, one purple and one green.

How it came about

Alt Àneu was created in 1970 by the union of the old municipalities of Isil, Son, Sorpe and València d’Àneu, plus the territory of the Mancomunitat dels Quatre Pobles, which belonged to no municipal territory. The name combines Alt with Àneu. The flag was approved on 6 September 1995.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 1995 and there are no documented later modifications.

What it means

  • White cross

it divides the field into four parts. Its centre falls a third of the way along, counting from the flagpole.

  • Fields

red the upper left one and the lower right one; white the other two.

  • Angles of colour

four squares parallel to the cross, one next to each field. Two yellow, one purple and one green.

  • No figures

there is no coat of arms or drawing, only colours and lines.

The four angles of colour are the ones that carry the figures of the municipal coat of arms, turned into pure colour with no drawing.

Fun facts

  1. A municipality formed by four towns

Alt Àneu is not a town: it is a union. In 1970 Isil, Son, Sorpe and València d’Àneu merged, and the territory of the Mancomunitat dels Quatre Pobles was added. The flag of the municipality reflects that condition with four fields and four angles.

  2. The coat of arms without the drawing

Many flags —above all the Catalan ones of the nineties— carry the whole coat of arms. Alt Àneu does the opposite: it keeps the shapes and colours of the arms but removes the drawing. Four squares of colour are left.

  3. The off-centre cross

The centre of the white cross does not fall in the centre of the field, but a third of the way along from the flagpole. It is a deliberate off-centring: the flag has a different visual weight on the mast side and on the free side.
