The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of the province of Almería is a white field with a red Cross of St George crossing it from side to side and the coat of arms of the province in the centre. It is the official flag since 2017.

How it came about

The Provincial Council of Almería adopted this flag in 2017. Before that a green flag was used that never became official: it was a provisional coat of arms applied to a coloured field, with no administrative backing.

How it has changed

The change of 2017 was precisely the recognition of what was already being flown. The white flag with the Cross of St George and the coat of arms is the first official banner of the province; the earlier green one was a de facto use.

What it means

  • White

the colour of the field. There are no other divisions or borders.

  • Red Cross of St George

its vertical and horizontal arms run from side to side and reach the edges, so that the coat of arms ends up on the crossing.

  • Coat of arms

large, in the centre, covering the crossing of the cross. It has a white border that separates it from the red background.

Fun facts

  1. A flag that legalises what was already being flown

The Provincial Council of Almería had been using a green flag for years that was never official. The 2017 one legalises a prior use, but it also changes the colour: it is the moment a custom becomes an administrative act.

  2. The cross and the coat of arms overlap

The provincial coat of arms is placed over the crossing of the cross, not beside it. The white border around it stops the edges from mixing: it is a contrast solution, usual when one coloured figure goes over another.

  3. 7:11 ratio, not 2:3

The flag of the province uses a 7:11 ratio, which is unusual. Municipal flags are almost always 2:3, but provincial flags and those of the provincial councils may use other ratios.
