The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is a blue field with the white logo of the region in the centre: a mountain inside a circle and, to its right, the name of the region.

How it came about

Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is a region of France created in 2016 by the merger of Auvergne and Rhône-Alpes. Its flag, with the white logo on blue, has been in use since September 2016.

It is not a heraldic flag: there are no arms and no coat of arms. It is a brand flag, built from a logo.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was adopted in 2016 with the creation of the region.

Fun facts

  1. A logo flag

Modern administrative regions in Europe usually build their flag from a graphic mark rather than from a coat of arms. This one carries the name of the region written on the field, which is unusual in a flag.

  2. A mountain inside a circle

The logo combines a circle with a mountain silhouette inside it and the text of the region to the right. The circle works as a mark, not as a coat of arms: there is no crown, no crest and no divisions.

  3. It is born with the region

The flag is from 2016, the same year the region was created by the merger of Auvergne and Rhône-Alpes. There is no earlier flag: the region and its banner start together.
