The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Balenyà is a yellow field with a black eagle head in the first third, by the flagpole. The remaining two thirds are filled with red lozenges in three rows.

How it came about

Balenyà is a municipality in the comarca of Osona, in the province of Barcelona. Its flag was published on 23 September 1999.

The design comes from the coat of arms of the village and keeps its two pieces: the eagle head and the field sown with lozenges. On the flag, the lozenges become a field of tiling.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It is from 1999 and there are no documented later modifications.

What it means

  • Yellow

the background of the field, with no divisions drawn.

  • Eagle head

black, centred in the first vertical third, by the flagpole.

  • Lozenges

three rows of six touching red lozenges, which reach the top, bottom and fly side edges.

Fun facts

  1. One third of figure, two thirds of tiling

The field is divided unevenly: the first third, by the flagpole, carries the eagle head alone, and the other two thirds are a field of lozenges. The division is not in half but at a third.

  2. The lozenges reach the edges

The three rows of six red lozenges touch each other and reach the top, bottom and fly side edges. They are not centred: the tiling fills the field to the edge, like a mosaic.

  3. Only the head, not the whole eagle

The coat of arms shows an eagle head, not the complete bird. The flag keeps that part: a figure that reads better at a distance than an eagle with spread wings.
