The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Blanes is a red field with a white cross whose arms reach the four edges. The cross divides the ground into four equal parts.

How it came about

Blanes is a municipality in the province of Girona, on the coast of the Empordà. Its flag dates from 3 January 1995.

The two arms of the cross have the same thickness and the same length, and they reach the edge of the field. There is no margin: the cross takes up the whole ground.

How it has changed

No earlier versions are documented.

Fun facts

  1. A cross that touches the four edges

The white cross is not centred leaving a margin around it, as on the flag of Savoy: here its arms reach the edge of the field. That is what makes the red split into four identical quadrants.

  2. The simplest cross possible

No border line, no shadow, no ornament at all. It is a cross formed by two straight strips of equal thickness, and nothing more. Among the flags of the repository it is one of the most elemental.

  3. The St George cross is at its purest here

The Cross of St George usually appears with ornaments, and on other flags, over a more complex ground. Blanes leaves it alone on the red, with no other figure to support it.
