How it is described

The flag in the words of vexillology and heraldry.

Vexillological description

It is a rectangular field with a 2:3 ratio divided into four quarters, like the coat of arms of the municipality.

Blue quarters
the upper one on the fly side (the free side) and the lower one next to the flagpole, plain.
Barcelona quarters
the other two. Each one repeats the coat of arms of Barcelona: a red cross on white and, beside it, vertical red and yellow bars.
Colours
the gold and silver of the coat of arms become yellow and white.

The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

Barceloneta is a municipality on the north coast of Puerto Rico. Its flag has four squares: two blue and two that copy the coat of arms of Barcelona, with its red cross and its stripes.

How it came about

The town was founded in 1881 by the Catalan Bonocio Llensa Feliú, who gave it the name of the seafaring district of Barcelona because it reminded him of his homeland.

The flag was designed by Roberto Biascochea Lota, heraldic adviser to the Puerto Rican Institute of Culture. He put the old coat of arms of the municipality onto cloth, and the Municipal Assembly approved it on 31 May 1979.

How it has changed

It has not changed since 1979.

What it means

It is a reminder of the Catalans who founded the town:

  • Red cross on white

the cross of St George, patron of Catalonia, which is on the coat of arms of Barcelona.

  • Red and yellow bars

those of the flag of Catalonia, also on that coat of arms.

  • Blue

the Atlantic Ocean, which washes the municipality.

Fun facts

  1. The flowers left on the coat of arms

On the coat of arms, the blue quarters carried branches of guajana, the flower of the sugarcane. When it was put onto the flag they were removed.

  2. A name that comes from a district

Barceloneta is not called that after Barcelona, but after La Barceloneta, the district next to the port of the Catalan city.

  3. City of pineapples and of a champion

The municipality is called Ciudad de las Piñas, Ciudad Industrial and Pueblo de Sixto Escobar, after the boxer who was born there and was the first Puerto Rican world champion.
