The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Benicàssim is the Valencian senyera —four red bars on yellow —with the coat of arms of the town in the centre.

How it came about

Benicàssim is a municipality in the province of Castellón. Its flag dates from 28 September 1989.

The coat of arms is topped with a closed royal crown. Above it bear the bars of Aragon; below it is divided in two: at the flagpole, a green ground with a crescent and a star; at the fly side, a blue ground with a white diagonal band.

How it has changed

No earlier versions are documented.

  • Upper part of the coat of arms

the bars of Aragon, red on gold.

  • Lower part, at the flagpole

  • Lower part, at the fly side

a blue ground with a white diagonal band and three small silver figures.

Fun facts

  1. The coat of arms repeats the bars of the field

The field is already the senyera, and the coat of arms carries the bars of Aragon again at the top. The same motif appears twice: large, across the whole ground, and small, in the chief of the shield.

  2. Two opposed halves below

The lower part of the coat of arms is divided into two halves that do not resemble each other: green with a crescent and a star on one side, blue with a diagonal band and three silver figures on the other. It is the richest part of the whole design.

  3. The star over the crescent

In the green half, the six-pointed star sits on top of the crescent, not beside it. The superposition of the two signs is what makes that half read as a single figure.
