The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Beniflà is a blue field with a white shell at the centre of the upper half, two lozenges of red and yellow bars at the sides, and four wavy white stripes in the lower part.

How it came about

Beniflà is a municipality in the province of Valencia. Its flag is one of the symbols of the municipality.

The shell is a two-part shell, with the ribs marked, and it occupies the centre of the upper area. The lozenges with alternating bars are a traditional motif of the region; the name of the municipality comes from Arabic, beniflà.

How it has changed

No earlier versions are documented.

What it means

  • Blue

    the background of the field.

  • Shell

white or pearl grey, at the centre of the upper part. A two-valve shell with the ribs marked.

  • Lozenges

two, on each side of the shell, with alternating horizontal red and yellow bars.

  • Wavy stripes

four white bands of equal width in the lower part, separated by the blue.

Fun facts

  1. Four white stripes on the blue

The waves of the lower part carry no border line: they are the blue ground itself showing between white bands. It is the same device used by the flags of Amur and Beneixida, resolved here in white and blue alone.

  2. The lozenges carry bars, not flat colours

The two lozenges are not of a flat colour: they carry alternating horizontal red and yellow bars, the same motif that appears on other Valencian arms. The flag keeps the detail instead of simplifying it.

  3. A shell, not a whole mollusc

The central figure is a valve —half of a shell —not a complete mollusc. That more discreet choice is what lets it sit in the centre of the field without dominating the composition.
