The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Aielo de Rugat is a blue field with a yellow tower in the centre, flanked by two white brambles and crowned by an eight-pointed star.

How it came about

Aielo de Rugat is a municipality in the province of Valencia, in the comarca of Vall d’Albaida. Its flag was approved on 1 June 2015.

The tower is the castle of Rugat, and the eight-pointed star above the tower is the Virgin, patron saint of the town.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 2015 and there are no documented later modifications.

What it means

  • Blue

the colour of the field, plain and with no stripes.

  • Tower

yellow, with the ashlar marked in black, opened in blue and topped by a crown with a white eight-pointed star.

  • Brambles

two, at the sides of the tower, in white or pearl grey.

  • Position

the tower rises from the line of the ground, centred on the field.

Fun facts

  1. An eight-pointed star for the Virgin

The star that crowns the tower is the Virgin, patron of the town. It is a rare case: the sacred figure does not appear as a person but as a geometric symbol at the top of the tower. The eight-pointed star is her shape here.

  2. The ashlar drawn in black

The tower is yellow, but its stones are marked in black and the opening is blue, the same colour as the background. It is ashlar drawn over a single figure: a technique that gives volume without needing a second ink.

  3. Two brambles, and not two trees

The plants flanking the tower are brambles, not trees. They are climbing shrubs, and they appear in white or pearl grey. It is the rarest part of the design: what surrounds the castle is not a wood but a thicket.
