The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of the province of Huelva is blue and carries the coat of arms of the Provincial Council in the centre. It is an unusual coat of arms: two golden ovals, one next to the other, with a fortified port in one and three ships between two globes in the other. It is an official and fairly recent flag.

How it came about

The Provincial Council of Huelva approved the flag on 15 September 2010, and it was published in the official bulletin on 22 October of that year. It has an unusual ratio, of 11 by 18.

Before that, an unofficial flag was used: a white ground with a small blue square containing the earlier coat of arms, in which the voyage of 1492 and the importance of Huelva as a port stood out.

How it has changed

The 2010 flag replaced an earlier unofficial flag, with a white ground, which had the coat of arms in a small blue square.

What it means

The coat of arms gathers two ideas, the sea and trade:

  • Oval with a fortified port

a port with three towers, surrounded by the motto “Portus maris et terre custodia”, which means “port, guardian of the sea and of the land”.

  • Oval with three ships between two globes

the maritime heritage of the province, with voyages all over the world.

  • Mercury’s staff

    trade.

  • Cornucopia

    wealth.

  • Laurel branches and royal crown

ornaments of the coat of arms.

Fun facts

  1. A coat of arms with two halves

It is a coat of arms with two ovals, one beside the other.

  2. A motto in Latin

The motto “Portus maris et terre custodia” surrounds the oval of the port and means “port, guardian of the sea and of the land”.

  3. Flag of 2010

The previous, unofficial flag was white with a blue square. The current one, blue with the coat of arms in the centre, was adopted in 2010.
