The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Mie is green, with a large white み swept to the left: it is the initial syllable of the name in the hiragana syllabary, the curving alphabet of Japanese. There is only one problem: it is not a legal flag. The prefecture never approved a rule creating it, and it is used purely by custom.

How it came about

The origin was a competition: in 1964, on the inauguration of the new prefectural building, Mie called for ideas for its emblem. There were 437 entries and the chosen one was made official on 20 April. The drawing turns the み into an arrow pointing upwards: the leap forward of the prefecture. And the circle in the lower left corner, according to the official explanation, is not an ornament: it is a pearl of the kind cultivated in Ago Bay, the product that gave Mie worldwide fame.

How it has changed

Nothing essential has changed since 1964: on 30 January 2001 some details of the drawing were adjusted and the flag stayed the same.

What it means

  • Deep green

according to the official explanation, it mixes the green of the Mie mountains with the blue of its more than 1000 km of coast.

  • White み

the initial syllable of the name, drawn as an arrow: the prefecture moving forward.

  • White circle

a pearl, from the cultivation of Ago Bay, the economic emblem of Mie.

Fun facts
