The full story
How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.
The flag of Bonastre is a blue field with a golden eight-pointed star in the centre. There is nothing more: no coat of arms, no crown, no borders. It is one of the simplest flags that can be drawn, and also one of the clearest, because the star does not represent a constellation or a saint: it is the name of the village.
How it came about
Bonastre is a municipality in the Baix Penedès, in Tarragona. Its coat of arms was approved by resolution of 5 March 2008, and its municipal flag by resolution of 29 September of that same year.
The coat of arms is rounded —round, like the coats of arms of the Generalitat —and bears on a field of azure a gold eight-pointed star. Above it, instead of the open royal crown, is a mural crown of a town: the one of a wall with battlements, which is what municipalities without a noble title use.
The star is not a modern invention. It appears on the seals of the village from at least 1730, when it already had eight points, and it was sometimes drawn on round or oval seals. Its origin is in the name: in Catalan, bon astre means “good star”. The star is the name of the village drawn.
How it has changed
It has not changed: it is the flag approved in 2008.
What it means
Blue

Eight-pointed star
the bon astre, the good star of the place name. It goes in the centre and is the only figure on the flag.
Fun facts
The name of the village is a star
In Catalan, bon astre means “good star”. The eight-pointed star of the coat of arms and of the flag is neither a celestial symbol nor a Star of Bethlehem: it is the name of the municipality written in image, which in heraldry is called a canting seal.
Eight points, and since 1730
What is usual on a municipal coat of arms is a five-pointed star. Bonastre uses eight, and has done so for more than two hundred and fifty years: the star already appears on the seals of the village in 1730, sometimes inside a round seal.
A mural crown instead of a royal crown
The open royal crown is the traditional crest of Valencian municipalities and the one recommended by the regulations on symbols. Bonastre, on the other hand, bears a mural crown of a town, the one of a wall with battlements, which is what corresponds to a municipality without a noble title.
The flag does not carry the coat of arms
The star appears loose on the blue, without the frame of the shield. It is the practice of Catalan regulations, which ask that the municipal flag be founded on the colours and elements of the coat of arms while seeking not to place the coat of arms entire on top.
