The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Cerdà is a white field with four things on it: a blue fleur-de-lis, two roosters, the Tau of St Anthony and a chequered border. It is one of the most heavily loaded flags of the Costera.

How it came about

Cerdà is a municipality in the Costera, in the province of Valencia. Its coat of arms was approved by Resolution of 28 June 1999, of the conseller de Presidència, published in DOGV number 3,549. The flag came nine years later, by the Resolution of 4 March 2008, of the first vice-president and conseller de Presidència, published in DOCV number 5,735.

In the first partition of the coat of arms are the arms of the Cerdà, lords of the village, to whom it owes its name. Beside them is the Tau cross, the symbol of Sant Antoni, patron of the locality and title holder of the parish.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 2008 and there are no documented later modifications.

Fun facts

  1. Two stories on one field: the Cerdà and St Anthony

The coat of arms and the flag carry two different stories: the arms of the Cerdà, who gave the village its name, and the Tau of Sant Antoni, its patron and the title holder of its parish. Lordship and devotion live together on the same field.

  2. The flag is newer than the coat of arms

The coat of arms was approved in 1999; the flag, in 2008. Nine years of difference, and only the flag carries the chequered border, a detail that does not appear on the coat of arms.

  3. Red appears only in the Tau and the combs

The field is white, the fleur-de-lis and the roosters are blue, the border is gold and sable. Red is in only two places: the combs of the roosters and the Tau cross. It is the colour of the detail, not of the ground.
