The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Esposende has eight yellow and blue gironnies (triangles). In the centre it carries the coat of arms, with Our Lady of Esposende over a three-masted sailing ship. It changed in 1995 because the town had become a city.

How it came about

Esposende was a town from 1572 and a city from 2 July 1993. The current flag and coat of arms were published in the Diário da República on 27 April 1995, according to Flags of the World. They are a very similar version to the previous one, with the crown of five towers of a city and the ground of eight gironnies.

How it has changed

The first versions had been published on 13 February 1985: a flag of four blue and yellow quarters and a crown of four towers, that of a town. We have not found a free image of that flag.

Fun facts

  1. There are versions with the colours reversed

Flags of the World warns that some images draw the blue and yellow gironnies in the wrong order by mistake.

  2. City in 1993, new flag in 1995

Being raised to city status forced a change of the ground and the crown of the flag, as happened in Fafe.
