The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Formentera del Segura splits the field into two vertical halves with one figure each: the wheat of the huerta and the water of the Segura. It is the coat of arms of the village extended onto the cloth.

How it came about

Formentera del Segura is a municipality in the Baix Segura, in the province of Alicante. Its coat of arms follows a different rule from the usual ones: it was approved by Royal Decree 1830/1976, of 2 July, published in the Boletín Oficial del Estado number 182. The flag came twenty-one years later, by the Resolution of 6 June 1997, of the conseller de Presidència, published in the DOGV.

The coat of arms shows the shield, the arms of the Pérez de Sarrió — marquises of Algorfa and lords of Formentera —and some waves representing the River Segura. The flag, on the other hand, changes one of the two figures: instead of the Pérez de Sarrió it puts a sheaf of wheat.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 1997 and there are no documented later modifications.

What it means

  • Blue

the half by the flagpole, where the wheat is.

  • White

the fly side half, where the waves are.

  • Sheaf of five ears

a canting element from the name of the village, Formentera, derived from «formentera», the land that gives wheat.

  • Three blue waves

    the River Segura.

Fun facts

  1. Twenty-one years between coat of arms and flag

The coat of arms was approved by Royal Decree in July 1976 and the flag in June 1997. More than twenty years of official arms with no legalised cloth.

  2. The name means “the one that gives wheat”

Formentera comes from formenter, the fallow or fallow land, the one left resting so it becomes fertile. Hence the sheaf of five ears the flag carries.

  3. The flag changes one of the two figures

The coat of arms carries the noble shield of the Pérez de Sarrión and the waves of the Segura. The flag keeps the waves but replaces the lords’ shield with the sheaf of wheat. It is a rewriting of the heraldic motif, not a copy.
