The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa, has three vertical stripes, blue, green and red, and in the centre the coat of arms of the city inside a golden knot. Its colours recall those of the flag of South Africa, adopted three years earlier, at the end of apartheid.

How it came about

The city adopted it on 16 May 1997 to replace the 1970 flag. In the 1990s South Africa changed its symbols with the arrival of democracy, and Johannesburg wanted a flag in the colours of the new country.

How it has changed

Johannesburg has had two flags.

the colours of the national flag of South Africa.

  • Coat of arms in the centre

the emblem of the city, surrounded by a knot that also appears on the coat of arms itself.

Fun facts

  1. Twenty-seven years of green and gold

The city’s first flag, of 1970, was green and gold, with none of the colours we today associate with South Africa. It was used for 27 years.

  2. The repeated knot

The golden interlace in the centre of the flag also appears, smaller, inside the city’s coat of arms, in red and gold.
