The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

How it came about

Flag and coat of arms were published on 24 June 1972 in the official gazette of the state. The town is much older: it received its municipal charter on 12 March 1261.

How it has changed

No earlier versions of the flag or the coat of arms are known.

What it means

  • White and green

the colours of the quarters. The official description says argent, that is, white.

  • Woman with two loaves on a tower

according to tradition, Deu-la-Deu Martins, who saved the town from a siege.

  • Blue and white waves

the water, at the base of the coat of arms.

  • Motto on the border

“Deus o deu, Deus o há dado”.

    the band says “MONÇÃO”.

Fun facts

  1. The woman who threw the bread

According to tradition, in the fourteenth-century wars with Castile, Deu-la-Deu, wife of the castellan, threw the last loaf at the besiegers. They believed the town had plenty of food and left. It is a legend.

  2. A motto that sounds like a miracle

“Deus o deu, Deus o há dado” means “God gave it, God has given it”. It is written on the border of the coat of arms.

  3. Grey where it should be white

In many images the white comes out grey. The official description says “argent” and, according to a contributor to Flags of the World, it is confused with grey.
